Capt. Rajesh Sharma Mar 15, 2026

Becoming a commercial pilot in India is a dream shared by thousands of aspiring aviators. The journey from ground to cockpit requires dedication, the right training, and a clear understanding of the process.

Step 1: Meet the Basic Requirements

To begin your journey toward a Commercial Pilot License (CPL), you must have completed 10+2 with Physics and Mathematics. You need to be at least 17 years old and hold a valid Class 1 Medical Certificate issued by a DGCA-approved medical examiner.

Step 2: Choose the Right Flight School

Selecting an accredited flying school is crucial. Look for institutions approved by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) that offer comprehensive training programs combining ground school with practical flight hours.

Step 3: Ground School Training

Ground school covers essential subjects including Air Navigation, Meteorology, Air Regulations, and Technical Subjects. This theoretical foundation is critical for passing DGCA examinations.

Step 4: Flight Training

You will need to log a minimum of 200 flying hours, including instrument rating time. Training progresses from basic maneuvers to advanced cross-country navigation and emergency procedures.

Step 5: DGCA Examinations

After completing your training, you must pass all DGCA written examinations and flight tests. The examinations cover multiple subjects and require thorough preparation.

Career Prospects

India's aviation sector is booming, with airlines adding new aircraft and routes regularly. Starting salaries for First Officers range from ₹8-15 lakhs per annum, with experienced Captains earning ₹30-50+ lakhs.
